A photo-story about Rye Lane and Bellenden Road, London SE15.
“Here are rows of Afro-Caribbean hairdressers bubbling with laughter and the ricochet and crack of gossip. Beyond that is Rye Lane. It’s a vivid, scuffed place of saturated colours where normal everyday life is a spectator sport.” Jay Rayner, The Guardian.
Over the past six months Michael has been photographing both Rye Lane and Bellenden Road, London SE15 ahead of a display of his work in the Annual Dulwich Artists Open House Festival taking place over two weekends in May. Michael exhibits alongside artist Mark Pearson. Vast changes have occurred in the past few years, both since the riots of August 2011 and the London Olympics of 2012. The area has gained much support, including a rail transport infrastructure of a standard and comprehensiveness that would have defied belief a decade earlier.
